Our History

In 2018, Jody Wood, Director of the JW actors studio in New York and Princeton, developed SKIT, an improv techniques based program focusing on social and communication skills for individuals with on the Autism Spectrum and with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Jody began researching and developing best practices for a program that would meet the needs of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) along with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to help enhance confidence and creativity along with communication and socialization skills.

Initial programs were conducted at the Galloway Middle School’s FUN (Friends United Now) after school program in Galloway Township, NJ. The results were overwhelmingly positive. Students loved the sessions and more importantly, were very engaged! The professionals who participated were very inspired and surprised by the results. The staff (consisting of teachers and a psychologist) shared that they had never seen such a connection among the group. Impressed by the fact that the students were able to quickly let their guard down, the staff attributed it to the SKIT programs’ safe atmosphere and improvisational techniques developed to address their students’ needs. The SKIT program helped the class work on their social and communication skills!

Especially struck with the fact that most young adults with ASD have a very high unemployment rate or “under employment” rate mostly because of less developed social communication skills, SKIT set out to establish a well-formed program that can be delivered to all individuals regardless of age, in a recreational or academic setting.

Through its program SKIT has seen meaningful relationships and friendships begin; stronger social communication skills and has even inspired students try to perform at local theaters.

If you are a parent or caregiver of a person who is on the Spectrum or has an intellectual or developmental disability, please contact us and SKIT will be happy to discuss how our workshops could make a difference!
